Some optional but still useful items to bring along on your hiking adventure include a map of the hiking trail a cell phone a first aid supply and a small compass. These things would be helpful if it will be your first time on a hiking adventure. Not only will they help you have a more pleasant adventure they can also keep you safe.
Just after we started the High Sierra we met Swiss Miss and Pang. I hiked together with them the rest of the way to Canada. Along the way I spend varying amounts of time with other hikers as well. A group of 12 of us left Yosemite together - The Dirty Dozen! Half of us were from the U.S. and half were from other countries so it became a very international experience. Each of us had strengths and weakness and we learned to work together as a team and to help and depend on each other. My greatest fear before starting the hike was crossing the rapid flowing icy cold rivers. They turned out to not be as terrible as I had expected. We had a few close calls and some struggles but the teamwork was amazing and we did it together.
Carabiners. If you are going on a mountain hiking trip all by yourself then make sure you have carabiners. Carabiners are small metal clips that are usually made of aluminum. You will need carabiners while hiking so you can clip yourself onto the mountainous surface or you can even clip your gear onto them. You can use carabiners for a variety of purposes depending on their shapes and styles. You can even use larger locking carabiners for belaying and for securing the rope to the surface of a mountain. You can use non-locking carabiners for holding other gear and for nonessential clips.
